This month the fashionable local magazine Capital Style released a Prom Edition. The team from Capital Style asked if we had any prom inspired dresses for the shoot and we offered the classic pleated black dress from Waverly Grey.It is a forever classic dress that will last a lifetime and will never be out of style.

We love how they styled this lovely girl from Columbus School for Girls. She looks young and fresh with a lovely updue and the leapord heels show some sass and character! Well done! This is a great Prom look for any stylish girl.

We are so excited that we had the opportunity to chat and exchange Q&A's with the lovely sisters that created the brand Claridge & King! The two talented designers are inspired by classic men's wear but made for women!

1. You find a lot of inspiration in menswear pieces. What attracts you to the menswear style and tailoring?

- Unlike women's fashion where every season the prevailing silhouette can vary wildly,there is a classicism in menswear that endures through the decades. That attention to tailoring and subtle details which you often find in very fine men's clothing is something we find quite alluring. We try to bring those same enduring qualities to our collection, paying close attention to the subtlest of details that fast fashion can often gloss over.

2. What are your best-selling styles in the collection?

- Our best-selling style is the piece that launched our brand: The His is Hers® Original Shirt. It's a versatile piece which like many of our designs leaves itself open to interpretation by the wearer. We love to see how the stylish women drawn to C + K reinvent our pieces. Everything from the His is Hers® shirt styles to simple sheaths like the Crew, another big seller, are heightened by the accessories that our customers pull from their closet to pair with our pieces.

3. Tell us a little bit about your target customer? Who is the Claridge + King woman?

- It's hard to pin point the age of our target customer because happily we've found that everyone from college girls to women in their seventies have found pieces that work with their lifestyle at Claridge + King. But regardless of their age or their geographic roots, we find the women who wear our brand (as well as the men who purchase it for them) are rather sophisticated and confident. They know themselves, their body and what works for them. They're the farthest thing from a slave to fashion, but they are nonetheless current and very much aware of well cut clothing and fashion.

4. How has the brand evolved since its launch in 2008?

- Three years ago when we launched the line we knew there were two directions we were interested in navigating: loungewear (which also encompasses stylish sleepwear) and casual ready-to-wear. We felt that there was a space in the sleepwear realm where women like us who didn't necessarily want prissy poly nightgowns or cat covered pajamas could find pieces as cool as the clothes we wore during the day. Creating a boxer, pajama pants with deep, fetching slits on the outside of each leg, smoking jacket inspired robes and of course, The His is Hers® Shirts that can be worn as nightshirt, we took on the challenge of ready-to-wear next. Often our designs are inspired by what's missing in our own and our customer's closets. We listen to what our retailers like Ladybird suggest we add to the line. For instance, last year after so many women told us how much they liked the styling in our boyfriend style shirts, but desired a fitted white shirt too, we took over a year to develop the Great White Shirt. It's our answer to that go anywhere pinpoint cotton shirt devoid of darts that's subtly tailored to nip in at the shoulders, bust and waist. This spring you'll find it edged with a tone-on-tone texture detail: white grosgrain ribbon sewn down the front and cuff plackets, with our logo embroidered discreetly in white thread atop it.

5. What do you hope to bring to Claridge + King in the future? What are your plans for 2012?

- What's ahead? More monochromatic pieces with a palette heavy of grays (from cool to warm tones), blacks, blues, olive and, of course, white–like the shades you'd find if you pinched pieces from your boyfriend/husband/brother's wardrobe. This spring, summer and fall you'll see more dresses that do double duty like a lot of our line.

From the return of the linen Belle (in midnight and sterling gray linen) that you can wear as a tunic or even a mini dress, to an off the shoulder dress dubbed the Grayson, to our first shirtdress inspired by our Great White Shirt which arrives for fall which you can wear as a dress or a long top, buttoned just to the waist and paired with pants like our luscious washed silk twill lounge pants arriving any moment.

We're also crazy about our sweaters. We love our fine, lightweight cashmere sweaters (The Long V Tee and the Two-Toned Crewneck) with a pinch of silk in them. They feel like t-shirts and layer like one, but wear remarkably well. (The silk in it diminishes the pilling you get with most cashmere.) And in about a month the Patch Sweater arrives. Available in three shades of gray it's a 100% cotton sweater with elbow to cuff leather patches on each sleeve. It's a great looking piece, our latest obsession. (Besides we're cold year round and always keep a sweater handy.)

How Ladybird wear's Claridge + King's the Great White

1. With Shorts

- The Original C+K button up looks great with a pair of cut off shorts. This is a great everyday look.

2. Dress Pants

- You can't go wrong pairing this Original style with a pair of navy dress pants. Add your favorite heels and a bright colored bag!

3. Printed Pants

- We really enjoy bright colored pants, and heavy printed pants. To tone down the pants we like to add the C+K Original button up.

Show me your Mumu is an up and coming brand from two young and successful women by the names of Cammy and Cologne. Over the summer of 2009, the two friends were on vacation together and were having a hard time getting their wardrobes together on hot summer days and nights. They would purchase large tees and stretch them out and tie em up but it never looked the way they visioned it. One night they decided how great it would be to make their own mumus. Large, baggy, and perfectly fitting mumus. The two girls created the brand Show Me Your Mumu. The girls live in Manhatten now designing fun colored and crazy patterend printed Mumus for every girl to enjoy.

Now we are carrying their signature Mumus and tanks here at ladybird this spring! Be prepared for loose tees to pair with your levi shorts and skinnys!

When it comes to winter most of us think of a dark color pallete for our wardrobe. Shades of black, grays, maroons and chocolate browns are always a must for the cold season. Although these colors are always perfect for the winter, why not show the other colors some love? Why only wear bright colors in the spring and summer? Who set these rules?!

Here at ladybird we love to give every color a chance in our wardrobes no matter what season it is. These are a few of our favorite colorful pieces we have in the store to brighten up your day no matter how cold it is!

1. Pants

- These Rebecca Minkoff pants are great for any nice outing. With a fur coat to keep you warm. This is a great bright piece for a winter evening out.

- Just got in these amazing tie die pants from Paige Denim! We love the navy, cream, and maroon splatter look on this piece. You can tone this down with a dark colored blouse or even sweater. These pants show character and is a piece you can really do a lot with. Great even for spring and summer with a pair of sandles or flats.

2. Blazers

- Seems like bright colored or even fun patterned blazers are in this year. We really love this poppy red blazer from BB Dakota. It's a great layering piece. Wear stripes or even a solid colored blouse under to dress up or down this look!

3. Tops

- Bright tops with dark bottoms are always a great way to freshen up a winter look. Red is always a really great color choice for the winter.

4. Belts

- Thin belts are a must this year. Sam Brown has brought us a variety of colors and prints to make any outfit sassy. Thin and colorful belts are great to add to any long maxi dress or just with a pair of your favorite jeans.

5. Clutches

- A bright colored clutch is always enough to make an outfit really stand out. That's why we love Clare Vivier's clutches. A staple piece to have. Great to pair with a casual outfit like this one or even a little black dress.

6. Jewelry

- Noble House Design always knows how to make a beautiful necklace to make any outfit look amazing. We love the earthy feel Noble House brings to each design. Layering this with a black sweater really will make any winter outfit look fabulous.

Winterize your Shorts!

We know when it comes to shorts it's really hard to vision wearing this other than the summer time. Shorts are such a great article of clothing that it should be worn all year long! Here are a few looks that would be a go for your winter look!

1. Velvet Shorts

- Velvet shorts are a must for the winter! Since velvet is a thicker material it is very appropriate for the winter season. Paired with a simple pair of tights, a classic button up, and your favorite necklace. This is a great winter look! Good to wear during the day with a pair of black boots or shiny black pumps for an evening out with your friends.

2. Jean Shorts

- Jean shorts can get a little messy when pulling off the winter look. A great tip is wearing a size up making the fit more loose and relaxed. Pair it with your favorite button up making it preppy with a fur vest is a great look. Make sure you stick with a solid and very simple pair of colored tights and boots. That way the look is clean and more winter then as if going out to the beach.

3. Floral Shorts

Floral shorts in the winter?! Oh yes we did! This is a really fun and flirty way to wear floral shorts in the winter. We paired these Sam & Lavi shorts with a long army green button up from Fluxus to tone down the brightness. Also adding a pair of knee high tan boots really made this look complete and more winterized. These boots are from Kelsi Dagger. To top it off we used this long gold charmed necklace from Twinkle. With all the multi colors on the necklace it really compliments the shorts!

4. Leopard Shorts (Casual)

Leopard has been such a trendy print for awhile. Which is great and should be worn more often by the ladies. This is a casual look that we really love. A great everyday look. Thrown with a cashmere QI Sweater and Messeca boots. And a winter hat! This screams a stylish winter look.

5. Leopard Shorts (Evening)

- To make the leopard shorts more dressy we prefer to jazz it up by adding this simple and staple piece crop top by Chaser. It's easy and really makes any outfit an evening piece. Adding a pair of black boots or even heels would be great for evening wear!

5. Sequin Shorts

- Show off your creativity by pulling off these aqua sequin shorts by Plastic Island! They are so fun and flirty. Adding a sleeveless blouse makes the look more casual then club wear. Also a classic leather jacket really pulls this look all together for a more edgy and modern feel.

6. Lace Shorts

Lace shorts are so fun to play with. These cream colored lace shorts by Sam & Lavi are made with a thicker material which is great for winter. Adding a chunky sweater (by Twinkle) and a bright red bag by Z Spoke really makes this a great winter look!

Holiday Dress Of The Week

This week at ladybird we received this very festive cocktail dress! The cranberry colored dress is from a brand called Paper Crown. It is fun and very flirty. The great thing about this dress is that it can be styled in so many ways. With a pair of simple black pumps and blazer would be perfect for a holiday party.

For this style we decided to make it more on the "edgy" side. We did this by pairing it with a classic Levi's leather jacket, and a pair of Isola leapord booties. Both of these can be purchased at ladybird. Another way to jazz this up is with a small black clutch with gold accents, and gold studs!This is more of a casual but still a very holiday look!

Yosi Samara is a male shoe designer that started this shoe brand in 2009. Samara has been around shoes all his life. He worked at his fathers shoe factory since he was very young so Samara has been experienced in this business for a long time. Samara created a classic and comfortable style of flats that will never go out of style. He keeps up to date with the trends by incorporting the new "trending patterns" with the shoe. Making sure that women aren't just feeling like they are walking on clouds but with style as well!

De'nada Scarves

De'nada is a scarves and accessories brand created by a woman named Virginia Blanca Arrisueño. Arrisueño was born and raised in New Jersey but her parents are immigrants from Peru. She was very inspired by the Peruvian culture and after graduating at the University of Maryland (focusing on Fiber Arts) she moved to Peru to focus on the De'nada brand.

Vintage clip-on studs were Jillian Diezler's first inspiration. She never was a fan of clip-ons but loved little studs. After doing a lot of hunting through vintage stores she collected pieces of jewelry and decided to start her own line of new vintage studs for every gal to enjoy. Jillian created a jewelry line called "Dainty Adornments" which consists of vintage studs.

Amy Spellacy is a ladybird original. She has been at the boutique since it first opened! Not only that but on her free time she hand makes these fantastic and colorful bracelets with little gems.

Amy says her inspiration for making these little bracelets is her grandma. She says her grandmother did all sorts of crafts and did everything so pretty and unique from her home to herself! By watching her grandma do all these crafty things, Amy also wanted to make fun and colorful things her self. After lots of practicing and experimenting she created these bracelets.

This month we will be receiving some wonderful pieces from up and coming designer Sena Yang. Raised in Seattle she moved to New York to persue her fashion career. Not only did she go to Rhode Island School of Design but she worked in the fashion houses of incredible designers such as Catherine Maladrino, Sue Stemp, and even Alexander McQueen.

Sena Yang developed her own brand and now has her own space in Garment District, New York City. The pieces that she creates all come from the inspiration of her favorite cities: NYC, Paris, and London. Her newest collection is very edgy with the symmetrical cutouts in many of her pieces. It has an influence of street style with the studded tops and skirts. But as well as a twist of shabby chic with a variety of flowy skirts, wide leg pants, and draped tops.

We’ve mentioned our strong affinity for Claridge + King many times before (case in point: here). With their super-flattering fit, soft fabric and array of colors, really, what’s not to love? The His is Hers oxford and tuxedo shirts have both been available for purchase at Ladybird for some time now. They’ve done exceptionally well with our little ladybirds and we always get gals dropping in wearing their C+K top or to scoop up another.

Pavonine

We're pleased to introduce a brand-new designer here at Ladybird! Pavonine is the creation of three gals (two sisters and their close friend) with a big love of fashion. Started in early 2009, the name comes from the Pavonine Quetzal bird - the only bird on the planet that will die if caged. The bird is well-known for its beauty and the Pavonine girls strive to bring the same beauty, courage and sense of self to the clothing they make and their customers.

Pavonine is definitely a great designer that will be sticking around for a long time. We're excited to see what they come up with next and to share their creations with you!

First up is BB Dakota. This is a brand-new contemporary, competitively-priced line we're now carrying at Ladybird. According to the brand, their look is "citified prep, Americana with a quirky, feminine twist." Really, what's not to love?!

Mink Pink holds a dear place in our little Ladybird heart. We've been carrying the label for a while now and we (and our customers!) just love it. The pieces are affordably priced and the designs are continually fresh and youthful...a winning combo!

The label began in Australia back in 2005 when the fabulous Mink Pink designers found inspiration from high-end collections and began the Mink Pink line from there. Since then, we at Ladybird (and now you!) have been enjoying all the great clothing Mink Pink has to offer.
